Vol Coston’s Weather Forecasting Caterpillars

From the December 20, 1923 Skidmore News (Skidmore, Missouri), page 1:

The Caterpillar
Have you noticed the caterpillars this year and how they are colored? Most of them around in this part of the state are yellow with a little black on each end. Vol Coston, an old timer in this vicinity says the caterpillar hardly ever fails to foretell the kind of winter we will have, and the sign this year is that we will have a little bad weather at the forepart and latter part of the season, which is indicated by the black on each end of the caterpillar. From the kind of weather we have been having, Mr. Coston’s sign seems to prevail, so far.
