Try Harder, Learn Something New – Skidmore Band, 1923

From the Skidmore News (Skidmore, Missouri), March 22, 1923, page 1:

Skidmore Band.

About eight or ten of the band boys gathered at the Legion Hall last Tuesday night and had a good practice. The music was just a little hard for beginners and especially for those who have not been playing very much for the past two or three years.

There will be practice at the same place next Tuesday evening at 8 o’clock and some new music will be on hand that will be easy for everyone, including the ones that started out last fall. Yes! all those started to learn last fall are invited to join and any one else that wants to get an instrument and join the circle is cordially invited. There will be some one there who will be willing to instruct you and the music that is being bought now will be easy so that the young members (and the old one too) can work them out. Everyone is urged to be present next Tuesday so that a lineup on how many instruments will be in the band, that the right number of parts can be ordered.

Just a word to those who started out last fall. Get your instrument in “tooting” shape and work on your beginners book that you received last fall so the fingering will be natural for you and then come in to band practice next Tuesday night. Don’t think because there will be a few old heads that the music will be too hard for you. It might be a little hard at first, but if you do not try something a little harder, you will never learn anything new.

Come on! Let’s Go!
