From the September 2, 1920 Skidmore News (Skidmore, Missouri), page 5:

Surprise.
Mrs. Martin Riley was agreeably surprised last Sunday, when some of her old Burr Oak neighbors, friends and relatives, came with well filled baskets to help her and her oldest son, Laurence, celebrate their birthday which was two weeks ago.

On account of the Chautauqua and busy time of the year this surprise was postponed, which made a complete one.In the evening Mr. and Mrs. Roland Palmer and son, drove in.

Those present were: Mr. and Mrs. Jesse McDonald and daughter and Ella Louise, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Roberts and family, Mr. and Mrs. James Reese and family, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Stephens and daughter, Dorris Marie, Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Shipps and family, Mrs. Nora Smith, Mrs. G. I. Riley, Zola, Viola and Glen Trimmer of Mound City, Hazel and Alfred Smith.

All departed wishing them many happy returns of the day.
