High School Contest, 1923

If you were in Skidmore, Missouri on this date in 1923, you’d be able to drop in to the preliminary contest at the M. E. Church. Here are the details from the April 19, 1923 Skidmore News:

HIGH SCHOOL CONTEST WEDNESDAY NIGHT
Winners Will Attend District Contest
Commencement Exercises May 18th.

The preliminary contest of the Skidmore high school will be held at the M. E. church next Wednesday evening, April 25th.

The winners in this contest will represent the local school at the district contest to be held in Maryville April 27.

Prof. H. A. Miller, head of the public speaking department of the State Teachers College at Maryville, will judge the declamations.

The high school commencement program will be given Friday evening, May 18th. Rev. A. J. Cooper, pastor of the Baptist church at Maryville, will deliver the class address. The baccalaureate sermon will probably be delivered by Rev. J. J. Cokely, pastor of the M. E. church here, the Sunday preceding the commencement program.

The program to be given next Wednesday evening consists of one oration, five declamations and three musical numbers, and is as follows:

Music — Orchestra.
Declamation, “The Happy Prince” — Helen McMahon.
Declamation, “Spreading the News” — Opal Hays.
Music — Chorus.
Declamation, “Humoresque” — Alletta Devers.
Oration, “Heroism of the Unknown” — Lawrence Linville.
Music — Chorus.
Declamation, “Miracle Play” — Eleanor Sewell.
Declamation, “Frans” — Dollie Rea Logan.
Music — Orchestra.

A small charge of 20 cents will be made to pay the necessary expenses of the contest.
