Straightening the River, 1914

Promising transportation news from the January 15, 1914 Skidmore New Era (Skidmore, Missouri), page 1:

Will Straighten River South of the Bridge

The County Court has agreed to cut a ditch through the M. A. Sewell land, straightening the river south of the bridge, west of Skidmore, if the citizens of Skidmore will pay all damage to land owners and give right-a-way. This proposition has been accepted by Skidmore and Monroe township citizens and a movement is now on foot to have the ditch cut at once before the spring rains.

This work is badly needed as the river is cutting away the public road west of the ridge every year. It is also a damage to land along the river bend. The shortening of the river will greatly help in reducing the overflow in high water time. Everyone who uses this road should be interested in this movement.
