Skidmore Weighs In

We are eternally grateful that today’s newspapers generally don’t go in for stories of this kind.  The Skidmore Standard reported the following “big” news on its front page two weeks in a row in June 1899, with the following article bringing the details the paper had promised the week before.  And modern folks think reality television is an entirely new thing.  Pshaw.

Very few towns the size of Skidmore can produce four men who will weigh 1,095 pounds – the weight of the “big four” – Frank Kidder, Walter Mitchell, T. L. Marlin and W. R. Linville.  The individual weights and measurements of these elephantine gentlemen are as follows:

Kidder, weight 321, height 5 feet 11 1/2 inches, waist measure 60 inches.  Mitchell, weight 268, height 6 feet 2 3/4 inches, waist measure 49 inches.  Marlin, weight 259, height 6 feet 2 inches, waist measure 50 inches.  Linville, weight 248, height 6 feet 3 1/2 inches, waist measure 43 inches.
