Modern improvements in town, as reported by the September 24, 1914 Skidmore New Era:
New Sanitary Grocery Counter
The Monarch has put in a new oak sanitary grocery counter. The new addition to the fixtures of this enterprising establishment is not only an ornament and a convenience to the store but best of all, it keeps all goods, such as sugar, dried fruits, rice, beans and anything you put in it absolutely free from dust and dirt. It is, as its name implies, sanitary, and that is a great thing in food products.
The counter is 16 feet long, as twenty-nine departments and answers as one of the best kinds of advertisements for the store, as it shows to the customer everything it contains.
