Roller Skating and a Greased Pig

Our Skidmore ancestors surely did know how to have a good time.  From the March 16, 1905 Skidmore New Era:

A large crowd gathered at the Haynes building last Wednesday evening to witness the contests by masked skaters for prizes offered by the Skidmore Roller Skating Club. The prizes offered were, for the best lady skater, a large bottle of perfume, and the gentleman who was supple enough to catch a greased pig was to keep the pig. The ladies’ prize was captured by Miss Mary Ashbrook. An exciting time was expected when the greased pig was turned loose, but this pig had piggish way sand could not be induced to run. John Bodle was the victor in this contest, catching and holding the pig without the least resistance on the part of that contrary animal.
