When the Skidmore News issued a call for rationing-friendly recipes in 1918, Skidmore’s cooks rose to the occasion. Here is a contribution from Mrs. Vol Coston, as published in the March 28, 1918 Skidmore News, page 1:

Graham and Rye Muffins
Sift 1 teaspoon baking powder with two-thirds cup of rye flour, add 1/2 cup graham flour and 1/2 teaspoon salt, add 1 cup milk, 1 teaspoon melted shortening and 1 egg beaten up well. Bake in buttered gem pans 25 to 30 minutes.
