Photo Invitations

Long before e-vites and Facebook events, we mailed our guests real, printed invitations to our parties.  Some of us went a step further in 1903 and sent really fancy invitations.

The July 28, 1903 Skidmore Standard reported news from the Oregon Sentinel:

The very latest and oddest method of sending out an invitation for a party is to use postal cards – not a plain, everyday card, but one on which a photograph is carefully printed.  One little girl in giving a doll’s party had the portraits of two of her handsomest dolls on the card, with the invitation written beside it.  Another has the photograph of a handsome Persian kitten that she loves very dearly.  These pictures make the invitation much more acceptable than if it were written on plain note paper, and are valued decorations for a room.  Many photographers will now take the pictures on postal cards for a small sum.
