Newspaper Men Meet at Burlington Junction

From the July 23, 1908 Skidmore New Era (Skidmore, Missouri), page 1:

Newspaper Men at Mineral Springs.
The newspaper men of southwest Iowa and northwest Missouri who did not accept the invitation given by the management of the Burlington Junction Mineral Springs missed a big treat indeed. All those in attendance, about thirty, will testify to the truthfulness of this statement.
Some of the pencil pushers arrived on Thursday evening, while others did not get there until the next day. Some of them were accompanied by their better halves and their children while others came alone. All passenger trains were met at the Burlington Junction station by automobiles and buses which conveyed Mr. Corken’s guests to the Springs.

Arriving at the Springs, the guests were made to feel at home. The spacious porches and an abundance of shade trees under which lawn swings had been placed, afforded an abundance of room for all to rest, drink, Nek-Roc and talk shop politics, and the croquet grounds, row boats, fishing tackle and target rifles were means employed by some in whiling the hours away.

Both afternoons base ball games were played on the Burlington Junction diamond by the Maitland and Burlington Junction teams. Both games were won by the Burlington Junction boys.

On Friday evening a short program was given at the Springs. In the absence of Mayor Wilson, J. H. Bryant of the Burlington Junction Post presided and made the welcome address which was responded to by W. C. McClintock, editor of the Beacon at Tabor, Iowa. Short talks were also made by Rev. R. O. Youtz of Burlington Junction and J. R. Graham of the Southwest Iowan, published at Malvern, Iowa. The Burlington Junction quartette was present and rendered several very pleasing selections as did the band that went down from town.

As a good feeder Host Corken cannot be excelled. At each and every meal the guests were served with well cooked eatables, in plenty.
The entertainment afforded was so royal as to make it positive that any who was there on this occasion, will anxiously wait for another invitation to spend a brief vacation at this delightful resort.
