Most Glorious Celebration

The June 2, 1899 Skidmore Standard just couldn’t wait for the city’s upcoming July 4 celebrations:

Skidmore always celebrates the Fourth and celebrates it in grand style, but this year we are going to spread ourselves and the eagle will scream louder than ever.  Everybody come and help us have a big time.

Oh, what a celebration we are going to have the Fourth!

Other towns in northwest Missouri will celebrate the Fourth but Skidmore will eclipse them all.

We want 15,000 people to come to Skidmore and help us celebrate the Fourth.  Come prepared to stay all day.  There will be plenty of space and shade for your horses and buggies, and no extra charges.

The excitement continued throughout the June 9 edition:

Come to Skidmore The Fourth and hear the eagle scream.  See the Balloon Go Up.  Hear Dr. Sam Steel of Nashville, Tenn., The funniest lecturer in the South.  Amusements all During the day.  Fire Works At Night.  The Program Will Be Announced Later.

Items from the Maitland Newspaper: Skidmore will fly the eagle July 4th.  That’s right, let everybody celebrate.  You’ll have a good time wherever you go if your heart is full of patriotism.

The biggest, grandest and most glorious celebration in the town’s history at Skidmore this year!

Our attractions for the Fourth this year will be original, new and entertaining.  Let everyone come and help us enjoy them.
