Miss Bessie Mitchell Buys a Ford, 1923

We’d argue that a new car is still newsworthy for most of our families, but when Miss Bessie Mitchell of Skidmore, Missouri purchased a Ford in 1923, it was front page news. From the April 5, 1923 Skidmore News, page 1:

Buys New Car.
Quite a number of Skidmore ladies bought new suits and hats for Easter, but Miss Bessie Mitchell, a member of the town girls basket ball team, could not be bothered with such small trifles, so she purchased a Ford coupe instead.

Now, most of us are aware of the skill Miss Bessie displayed in playing basket ball, but here’s hoping that when she starts to learn to drive her Ford, that some one will be along to “guard” her.

N. B. — Miss Bessie is still wearing one black eye.
