We don’t see too many recipes printed on the front page of the newspaper these days, but there was just enough room on page 1 of the March 28, 1918 Skidmore News to print Mrs. Vol Coston’s culinary creation:

Graham and Rye Muffins

Sift 1 teaspoon baking powder with two-thirds cup of rye flour, add 1/2 cup graham flour and 1/2 teaspoon salt, add 1 cup milk, 1 teaspoon melted shortening and 1 egg beaten up well.  Bake in buttered gem pans 25 to 30 minutes.
