Death of Katherine Long Lent, 1921

From the October 27, 1921 Skidmore News (Skidmore, Missouri), page 1:

A Mysterious Death.
That Mrs. Katherine Lent of near Mound City committed suicide some time Sunday, October 16, is believed by many.
Mrs. Lent, who had been making her home with her father, John Long, left the house Sunday, taking her two children, 2 and 4 years old, and a basket of lunch. She did not return, and the family began a search for her. Her body was found Monday afternoon, in a meadow about one-half mile from the house. A bottle which had contained strychnine was found close by, and her lips and cheeks were smeared with the poison. The two children were with the body when it was found.

A coroner’s jury Tuesday returned the verdict that she had died from strychnine poison, administered by herself or persons unknown.

Mrs. Lent was 28 years old and had been married twice. Besides the two children who were with her, she had a son, Robert Cecil Williams, aged 7, by her former marriage.
