Catawampus

We probably shouldn’t ask.

From the August 11, 1903 Skidmore Standard:

Bitten by a Catawampuss
John Tyler Linville was in town Saturday evening nursing a badly lacerated thumb.  He said he was bitten by a catawampuss one day last week and that quite an exciting and ferocious fight took place in the dark and lonesome nooks of the Sand Creek bottom, from which he issued forth a bloody, maimed and mangled but proud victor.  He forbid us dwelling longer on his thrilling adventure as he said the glory was all his own and wanted to tell it himself, so we keep “mum.”
