A message from Barrett Mercantile Co. of Skidmore, Missouri in the December 23, 1915 edition of the Skidmore New Era, page 7:

Ad reads, “We Thank You. Realizing that it is impossible for us to interview each one of our patrons and thank you kindly for the courtesies you have extended us during the year 1915, we wish to take this opportunity of expressing our true appreciation for the business you have seen fit to give us. From a financial standpoint the past year has not been a success, but we realize that financial success is not possible under all conditions and we do not wish to complain, bu ton the contrary, we are thankful for the pleasant business relations we have enjoyed with our customers, and we trust you will continue to give us a chance to serve you the coming year. We have honestly tried to give 100 cents worth of goods for every dollar we have received, and we are striving to get in a position where we can give even better values. Our policy for 1916 will be the same as we inaugurated over nine years ago, aside from the fact that we aim to procure better goods if possible, and to render better service if it is within our power to do so. True, we have made errors (who does not) but we have corrected them to the best of our ability. May we presume to invite you to cast your lot with us for the coming year. Again assuring all of our earnest appreciation for all patronage and wishing all a Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year. We are sincerely, Barrett Mercantile Co.”
