Bertha Coates weds John Reynolds, 1906

Wedding news wasn’t always this elaborately described in the Skidmore New Era (Skidmore, Missouri) paper.  We hope someone from the families of Miss Bertha Coates and Mr. John Reynolds will find the following from the June 28, 1906 edition, page 1, of interest:

Reynolds-Coates.

John Reynolds, who is stationed at Bigelow as night operator for the C. B. & Q. railroad, passed through our city Tuesday of last week en route to Clarinda, Ia., where a fair young lady was awaiting him.  This young lady’s name was Miss Bertha, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. O. Coates, a highly respectable couple.

The ceremony that united this young couple for life was performed at the home of the bride’s parents at 8:30 o’clock on Wednesday evening by the Rev. Mr. Abel in the presence of about sixty-five friends and relatives of the contracting parties.

Mr. Reynolds and his bride came down Friday morning and spent the day with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Reynolds, who had invited a large number of friends, who went to their home and enjoyed a fine dinner and a pleasant time.  Some fine music was rendered by a number of the young ladies present, among whom were the Misses Marie and Fannie Coates and Ona Wade.

A number of beautiful and useful presents were given the bridal couple on the evening of their marriage.  Among these was one set hand painted china plates, water set, two Haviland china tea sets, two sets silver spoons, Haviland china chocolate pot, silver cream ladle, bonbon spoon, two sets hem stitched table linen, four sets napkins, three linen table cloths, hand painted spoon tray, set silver knives and forks, hand painted plush cushion, two fancy cushions, cut glass salad bowl, china salad bowl, finger bowl, a number of towels, two bed spreads, two pastel paintings, dining room picture, rug, five dollar gold piece and a fine Mexican center piece.

Those who enjoyed the hospitality of Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds on this occasion were:  Rev. W. H. Welton and wife, Rev. W. C. Rice and daughter Elizabeth, H. W. Montgomery and family, G. L. Owen and family, C. E. Owens and family, Frank Goslee and family, Mrs. S. Saunders and family, David Mitchell and family, Jacob James and family, Miss Georgia McDonald, Elwood Barrett, Misses Bessie and Hazel Gray, Rinda Bagby, Grace Bohannan, Mrs. L. N. Torrey and daughter Carrie, Miss Ona Wade, Miss Cora Dixon, of St. Joseph, Mrs. Elizabeth Jennings, of Rock Port, Misses Marie and Fannie Coates, of Clarinda, Iowa.

Mr. Reynolds and bride left Saturday morning for Bigelow, where they will make their home.

The New Era joins their many friends in wishing them success and happiness through life.
