Barber Hog Sale, 1921

William F. Barber and John W. Barber had a good sale near Skidmore, Missouri in 1921. A quick search online tells us that $100 in 1921 would be roughly equivalent to $1,300 – $1,400 today. From the March 24, 1921 Skidmore News, page 1:

Wm. F. & John W. Barber had a Good Hog Sale.
Weather was Good and Attendance Fair. Offering Averaged More than $40.

Wm. F. and John W. Barber had a successful sale of Big Type Poland China hogs last Friday at the sale pavilion on the Burr Oak Grove Farms west of town. The weather was favorable for the sale, and the attendance was very good.

The offering of 92 lots sold at an average price of more than $40; the 42 lots sold by W. F. Barber bringing something over $30 on an average, while the 50 lots offered by John sold at an average of nearly $50.

Advertisement for a sale of Black Poland China sows by William F. Barber and J. W. Barber near Skidmore, Missouri on Friday, March 18, 1921. The ad ran on page 5 of the March 17, 1921 edition of the Skidmore News.

Advertisement reads, “Barber’s Big Spotted Poland Sow Sale, Skidmore, Missouri, Friday, March 18, 1921. 60 bred sows and gilts, 10 summer gilts, sell open, 9 big type Black Poland China sows, 9 big type Black Poland China gilts (part bred), 6 young boars, bred by 1,000 pound Spot. All double immuned. Sires: 1,000 pound Spot; Big Joe; Y.’s Booster Lad; Spotted Burr; Spotted Diamond. Bred to 1,000 pound Spot, twice grand champion of Missouri, Model Giant, a standard bred boar; Kencrest Englishman, 1-8 English; King Lou; Spotted Joe.
